History

The aims of the History Department are to teach the children as broad a knowledge of primarily British History as is possible during their stay at Lockers, the necessary skills to acquire that knowledge and an enthusiasm for the subject which will last well into their adulthood.

At senior schools, and particularly at GCSE level, the emphasis is on late nineteenth and early twentieth century history, so the time at Lockers is often the only opportunity which they will have to study the earlier years of primarily English history.  With this in mind, most boys start in the Junior Department with a study of the Romans and work progressively and chronologically hopefully through to the year 1600 by the time they leave.  By this time, they should have a grasp of the origins of many of the country's traditions, institutions and its constitution.

The primary aim remains that the boys should enjoy the subject and this in itself should engender the enthusiasm to pass the required exams well.
