Time Allocation:-
Years 3, 4, 5, 6: 7 x 35 minutes and a prep
Years 7 and 8: 6 x 35 minutes and a prep
All year groups have at least one double lesson a week, most have two double lessons.
Course followed:-
Heineman Maths is the core scheme for Year 3 to Year 6 to ensure progression and continuity, following the National Curriculum to KS2. The Essential Maths Series and a new series called Maths Prep, provides the basic course for Years 7 and 8, backed up by a very wide range of alternative test books, worksheets etc.
Key Stage 2:-
All aspects of the National Curriculum are covered. Progress tests are taken in Years 4 to 7 inclusive.
Entry Exam to Public School/Secondary School:-
Years 7 and 8 will complete the Common Entrance Exam syllabus, (Level 6/7 of the National Curriculum) and will be prepared for the necessary entrance tests or scholarship as appropriate.
Throughout the Department there is a sound emphasis on basic skills and knowledge and a high proportion of lesson time is devoted to direct whole class teaching with intelligent use of textbooks, worksheets and extension work for differentiation. A variety of teaching methods and range of activities are used with the aim of involving pupils and maintaining their interest, including group work, practical work and use of IT. Quality activities will often cover a number of programmes of study. There are daily opportunities for developing mental skills and investigations / problem solving is an important part of the syllabus. The aim is to build up the confidence of each child so that Maths becomes enjoyable rather than a subject that fills pupils with apprehension!
